bybler FAQ

Getting started

What is bybler? bybler is a textbook rental subscription. Instead of renting or buying books one at a time, you choose how many semesters you need — anywhere from 1 to 8 — pay once, and we ship you the required textbooks for your courses every semester until your plan ends.

How does it actually work? Pick a plan, tell us your class schedule, and we mail you the books you need before the semester starts. When the term ends, send them back with the free return label we include. Update your schedule again next semester and repeat — no re-shopping, no re-pricing.

Which schools does bybler work with? Right now, bybler is working with students at CU Denver. We’re looking to expand to more schools soon.

How much does it cost?

Instead of a few fixed plan lengths, you choose exactly how many semesters you want — anywhere from 1 to 8. The more semesters you commit to, the lower your per-semester rate:

Semester(s)Total PricePrice per SemesterSavings vs. 1-Semester Rate
1$165.00$165.00
2$300.00$150.009%
3$432.00$144.0013%
4$552.00$138.0016%
5$682.50$136.5017%
6$810.00$135.0018%
7$934.50$133.5019%
8$1,056.00$132.0020%
Prices do not include applicable tax at checkout.

Your per-semester rate is what’s used to calculate refunds if you ever transfer, withdraw, graduate early, or downgrade — see the refund questions below.

Books and coverage

What’s included in my plan? All required, reusable textbooks for the courses on your active schedule — shipped to you, with free return shipping at the end of each semester.

What’s NOT included?

  • Summer session courses. bybler plans currently cover fall and spring semesters only — summer books aren’t part of your subscription.
  • Single-use access codes — the codes bundled with some courses for online homework platforms (like MyLab, Connect, or WileyPLUS). These are tied to one student and can’t be reused, so they’re not part of your plan. If your course needs one, we’ll flag it when you build your schedule so it’s never a surprise.
  • Lab manuals or consumable workbooks that can’t be returned and reused.
  • Optional or recommended materials that aren’t actually required for the course.

What if I need a book that requires an access code? You’ll need to purchase that access code separately — we’ll let you know exactly which of your required materials fall into this category when you enter your class schedule, so you can plan for it ahead of time.

What if my professor requires a specific edition? Tell us your exact course and section when you update your schedule, and we’ll match you to the edition your professor actually requires.

What if the required edition changes partway through my plan? You don’t need to worry about this — every semester, we check the current required edition before shipping your books, so you’ll always get what your professor actually requires at that time, automatically, with no extra cost or action needed on your part.

Plans and billing

Can I switch plans after I sign up? Yes, in both directions, but upgrades and downgrades work differently:

  • Extending to more semesters (e.g., 2 semesters → 8 semesters): easy, and there’s no penalty. Your new, better per-semester rate applies to your remaining time going forward — not retroactively to what you’ve already paid. You’ll owe the difference between what you’ve already paid and what the new total costs for your remaining term.
  • Shortening to fewer semesters (e.g., 8 semesters → 4 semesters): treated the same as an early cancellation of your unused time. You’re refunded at your original locked-in per-semester rate for the semesters you’re giving up, minus our standard early-exit fee (15%, or $40 minimum — see the transfer/dropout question above). We apply the same policy here so there’s no advantage to signing up long and shortening later versus just choosing the right number of semesters from the start.

What if I transfer schools, stop attending, or simply want a refund? It depends on when you’re cancelling:

  • Within 48 hours of signing up: full refund, no fees at all — no questions asked.
  • After 48 hours, but before your current semester’s books have shipped: full refund for that semester, minus a 15% early-exit fee (or $40, whichever is greater) — this applies even if you’re on a 1-semester plan.
  • After your current semester’s books have shipped: that semester isn’t refundable, since your books are already on their way and in use. For any remaining full semesters left on your plan, we’ll refund you at your locked-in per-semester rate, minus the same 15% (or $40) exit fee. For example, a student on an 8-semester plan who withdraws with 5 semesters remaining would be refunded 5 × $132, minus the exit fee — landing around $561.

Refunds are always based on your locked-in rate, not the standalone 1-semester price, so the discount you earned only ever applies to time you actually complete.

What happens if I graduate early? The same policy applies — any remaining full semesters on your plan are refunded at your locked-in per-semester rate, minus the 15% (or $40 minimum) early-exit fee. Reach out to us once you’ve confirmed your graduation date and we’ll process it from there.

What if I need to sit out a semester or take a leave of absence? No problem — just let us know before your schedule deadline for that term. We’ll pause your plan: that semester won’t count against your total, your rate and remaining semesters stay locked in exactly as they were, and you’ll pick back up whenever you return. Pauses of up to a year (two consecutive semesters) are no problem; if you need longer, just reach out and we’ll work with your situation directly. This isn’t a cancellation or downgrade — no fees, no refund, nothing changes except the timeline.

Shipping and returns

How do I get my books? Once you’ve submitted your class schedule and it’s confirmed, we ship your books directly to you. Books typically ship within a few business days of confirmation, with enough lead time to arrive before your semester starts if you’ve submitted by the deadline for that term (see below).

Is there a deadline to submit my class schedule? Yes:

  • Fall 2026 semester: submit your schedule by July 27, 2026 to guarantee your books arrive by the first day of class (August 17, 2026).
  • Spring 2027 semester: submit your schedule by December 4, 2026 to guarantee your books arrive by the first day of class (January 19, 2027). This deadline falls before finals week and winter break on purpose, since a deadline during break is easy to miss.

If you submit after the relevant deadline but before the term starts, we’ll still process it, but we can’t guarantee delivery before your classes begin — the closer to the term start you submit, the more likely your books arrive a few days into the semester rather than on day one.

We’ll send reminders at 2 weeks, 1 week, and a few days before each deadline so it doesn’t sneak up on you.

If you add or drop a class during your school’s add/drop period, just update your schedule with us — we know registration changes are normal, so this isn’t treated as a late submission. We’ll get the corrected book to you as quickly as we can, though the on-time guarantee applies to your original deadline, not to changes made afterward.

Do I have to pay for return shipping? No — every shipment includes a free, prepaid USPS return label for the end of the semester.

When are my books due back? Your books are due based on your term’s end date — not one fixed company-wide deadline. bybler plans run on the fall and spring semester calendar, so your due date lines up with when your fall or spring term ends.

Do my books need to be back in hand by my due date, or just shipped by then? Just shipped. Your due date is a ship-by date — as long as USPS scans your package on or before that date, you’re on time, even if transit takes a few extra days to reach us. We check the tracking scan date, not the arrival date, so a slow mail carrier is never held against you.

What happens if I ship my books back late?

Timing (based on ship date)Consequence
Shipped by your due dateNo fee, regardless of when it arrives
Shipped 1 day lateGrace period — no fee
Shipped 2–5 days late$3/day late fee
Shipped 6+ days late, or never shippedCharged the book’s full remaining value, same as an unreturned book

We keep this window tight because a returned book needs to go straight back out to the next student who needs it — the sooner we get it, the sooner someone else can use it, which is part of what keeps prices low for everyone.

I’m taking summer classes — are those books covered? Not currently. bybler plans cover fall and spring semesters, which is what your subscription is built and priced around. If you’re taking summer courses, you’ll need to rent or buy those books elsewhere for now — we may expand to summer coverage down the line, but it’s not part of your plan today.

What if a book is lost or damaged while I have it? Normal wear — highlighting, notes, everyday use — is expected and never charged. Beyond that, fees are based on how much value the damage cost us, not a flat rate:

  • Moderate damage (torn pages, water damage, cover damage — still usable, but shortens the book’s future life): charged at 50% of the book’s remaining value
  • Severe damage (missing pages, unreadable, unusable going forward) or a lost book: charged at 100% of the book’s remaining value

“Remaining value” depends on how much life a specific copy had left — a nearly-new book carries more remaining value than one close to retirement — so fees vary by book and condition rather than a single flat number. Every fee is capped at the book’s actual replacement cost, so you’ll never be charged more than a brand-new copy would cost. If you think a fee was assessed incorrectly, you can dispute it with photos of the book’s condition.

Can I keep a book instead of returning it? Yes — you can buy out any book in your plan at any time during your rental. The price is based on how much life the book has left: a newer copy costs more to buy out than one nearing the end of its rental life. Either way, your buyout price is always capped at what a brand-new copy would cost — you’ll never pay more to keep a used rental than you would buying new.

Selling and buybacks

Can I sell bybler my old textbooks? This feature is coming soon! We’re not yet buying back textbooks, but we’re working on it. Once it launches, you’ll be able to enter your book’s ISBN, get an offer if it’s a title we can use, and get paid once we receive and confirm the book’s condition. Check back soon, or join our waitlist to be notified when it’s live.

How will you decide what to offer, once buyback launches? We’ll look at whether the book is needed by students on our current plans and its overall condition. Books we can put back into circulation for future semesters will get the best offers.

What if you don’t need my book, once buyback launches? We’ll still check if there’s resale value in it. If there is, we’ll typically offer a lower price than our rental buyback rate, since a book we can’t put back into our rental pool can only be resold once rather than rented out repeatedly. If a book has little to no resale value, we may decline the offer — in that case, we’ll point you toward other places (like buyback comparison sites) where you might get a better price.
