The problem we started with
The average student spends over a thousand dollars a year on textbooks. Buy new, and most of that value disappears the moment the semester ends — a $150 book might sell back for $20, if the bookstore wants it at all. Rent instead, and you’re re-shopping, re-pricing, and re-committing every single semester: find the right edition, compare rental prices, remember the return deadline, repeat in four months.
Nobody designed this system on purpose. It’s just what happens when publishers, bookstores, and students never solved the actual problem — how do you get students the books they need, without asking them to re-solve it constantly and re-pay for value that mostly evaporates.
That’s the problem bybler exists to fix.
Who’s behind this
I’m Adam Koritsanszky, and I’m building bybler on my own, from the ground up. I’m not a CU Denver student myself — I’m currently an online PhD student at the University of Southern Mississippi in Research, Evaluation, Statistics and Assessment — but I’ve called Denver and the Denver Area home for over 10 years and love this city, and CU Denver felt like the right place to start: a large school with a genuinely diverse student body, right in my own backyard.
As a student myself, and I’ve bought and rented plenty of textbooks over the years — I know firsthand how much that cost adds up, and how tedious it is to re-shop for the same books every single semester. On top of that, I’ve worked at a third-party textbook store as an undergraduate, so I’ve seen this industry from the other side too — the sourcing, the pricing, the operational reality of getting books into students’ hands. That’s not a problem I’m guessing at from the outside; it’s one I’ve lived through as a student and understood from the inside as someone who’s actually worked in the business.
That’s why bybler starts small and specific instead of big and generic: real policies, real pricing, and a founder who’ll actually answer your email if something goes wrong.
What we do
bybler is a textbook rental subscription. Instead of pricing books by the semester or the individual title, we let you choose exactly how many semesters you need — anywhere from 1 to 8 — so you make one decision and you’re covered for however long you need.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Pick your plan. Not sure how long you’ll need coverage? Start with a single semester. Know you’ve got a few years left? Lock in the better rate now.
- Tell us your classes. Every semester, you update your schedule with us. We match it to the books you actually need — no guessing, no ordering the wrong edition.
- We ship, you study. Your books arrive before the semester starts. Use them like you’d use any textbook — mark them up, highlight, take notes.
- Send them back, free. When the term ends, ship your books back with the prepaid label we include. No trips to a bookstore counter, no haggling over buyback price.
- Repeat, without repricing. If you’re on a multi-year plan, your rate doesn’t change. Update your schedule again next semester and we handle the rest.
Every book that comes back to us doesn’t sit in a warehouse — it goes straight back out to the next student who needs it. That’s not just good for the planet, it’s the actual mechanism that lets us keep prices lower than buying or renting book by book. Reuse isn’t a side benefit of our model; it is our model.
Why we built it this way
We didn’t want to build another marketplace, and we didn’t want to build another single-semester rental service — both already exist, and neither actually solves the underlying problem. A marketplace still asks you to shop and compare every time. A semester-by-semester rental still asks you to renew, re-decide, and re-pay attention every few months.
We wanted something closer to how a subscription is supposed to feel: you decide once, and then it just works in the background. So we built bybler around commitment — the longer you’re willing to plan ahead, the more we can save you, because knowing your schedule in advance means we can manage our own book inventory more efficiently instead of guessing. Your savings and our efficiency come from the same source.
What bybler isn’t
We want to be upfront about the edges of what we do, because we’d rather you know going in than be surprised later.
We don’t cover single-use digital access codes — the ones bundled with some courses for online homework platforms. Those are built to work for exactly one student, one time, so there’s no way to rent or reuse them the way we do with physical books. If your course needs one, we’ll tell you when you build your schedule, so it’s never a surprise when your order arrives.
We’re also not trying to be a bookstore that sells you everything under the sun. We do one thing — getting you the required, physical textbooks for your classes, for as long as you need them — and we’re trying to do that one thing well, rather than a little bit of everything.
Who we’re built for
bybler started with one campus in mind, not the whole country. We think that focus matters: a service built around understanding one school’s actual course catalog, actual professors, and actual textbook requirements can do a better job than a service trying to be everything to every student everywhere. As we grow, we’re staying close to that same idea — get it right for real students at real schools, not just in theory.
Where we’re headed
This is still early. We’re building bybler because we believe textbooks shouldn’t be something you have to re-solve every single semester — and we’re building it one honest step at a time: real pricing, real policies, and no promises we haven’t figured out how to keep yet.
